For me, I believe that doing math in unit studies when children are interested is the most beneficial. However, that does not mean that I don't value amazing resources as learning tools for children to utilize. Along with living books (chapter books, picture books, and informational books alike), games, and activities, I also believe that curricula (gasp!) can come in handy and be extremely beneficial at times. One of these said curricula is the Beast Academy curriculum--I use the word "curriculum" loosely here. Basically, Beast Academy uses fun and engaging graphic novel-style "textbooks" to teach your children concepts in math (and logic). Along with the graphic novels, there are also "workbooks" that remind me of fun logic puzzle books I have enjoyed in the past. They are completely secular and super enjoyable, as well as challenging. They are marketed for gifted children, but I believe that all kids could benefit from the program, so long as they are placed in the correct level. This "curriculum" is perfect for any homeschooling family that wants their children to regularly practice mathematics, but (of course) in a fun and engaging way so that your kids love doing it. Also, have I mentioned that I love this program? If you want to look inside the books, there are many flip-through videos available on YouTube. There is also an online option that I have heard is amazing, however, I personally would prefer the printed version.
Another curriculum that I also love and wanted to mention here is Wild Math. This curriculum uses nature and natural resources to teach children math.
Another option is a Waldorf-inspired math curriculum called The Beauty of Play. This curriculum incorporates art and hands-on creativity to teach children math.
I believe that if you teach math year-round, these three curricula are fantastic and would work really well together to provide a well-rounded mathematics education for children.
